Gold Star Mothers September 27
Sunday Sept. 27th the Warhawk Air Museum will honor "Gold Star
Mother's Day". Even though Service Star flags are rarely used
today, the Warhawk Air Museum honors "Gold Star Mother's Day",
the last Sunday of each September, as a day of reflection and
respect toward all mothers who have lost children to wars. Each
Gold Star Mother will receive the gift of a flower.
On June 23, 1936, the 74th Congress adopted Public Resolution
123, which stated that, "The last Sunday in September shall
hereafter be designated and known as, Gold Star Mother's Day...".
Use of the Service Star flags was commonly hung in the windows
of American homes during WWII, many of them handmade by mothers
themselves. They became a daily reminder of both pride and grievous
burdens borne by women in time of war.
When a blue star in any window changed to gold, it represented
the death of a son or daughter in the service and was a signal
to the community to rally behind the grief-stricken family. The
Museum is open 11 am - 4 pm.
Admission: General $8; Senior 65ys+ $6; Kids (5-12) $4
